MORE ABOUT OUR QUARTZ WORKTOPS & SPLASHBACKS

What are quartz worktops made from?

Whilst quartz kitchen worktops do contain naturally occurring elements, they are engineered with other materials for maximum durability. Essentially, quartz crystals are ground down and mixed with resin, polymers and pigments to create hardwearing surfaces in many colours. This blend of natural and manmade materials and polymers makes the finished product less porous than its stone counterparts. Because of this, quartz countertops offer greater resistance to staining and water marks than some natural stone worktops. They are also easier to clean and maintain.

The short answer is yes. The reported health issues associated with quartz worktops are related only to the fabrication of quartz and silica dust created when cutting and machining the material. There is no danger to health from quartz worktops installed in your kitchen or any other area of your home. Neither does the process of installing quartz worktops in your home present any health risk to you or our installers.

Quartz stone contains silica. The dust generated from cutting and machining the material has been linked with cases of the lung disease Silicosis. We minimise the risk to our staff by investing in the latest machinery that uses water to supress dust and our staff use appropriate personal protection equipment.

It should also be noted that the issue of Silicosis is mainly associated with forms of quartz that contain a high proportion of silica, generally 40% or higher. Many leading brands are investing significant sums of money into reducing the silica content of their quartz to below 40%. Furthermore, Silestone are developing new compounds that will remove most, if not all, of the silica from their surfaces.

We can bespoke granite surfaces for many uses, but here are some popular applications

  • Bespoke kitchen countertops
  • Worktops for breakfast bars and islands
  • Counters for bathroom vanity units
  • Wall cladding (and shower wall cladding)
  • Windowsills
  • Splashbacks
  • Outdoor kitchens/ bars
  • Fireplace hearths

Long-lasting durability

With much greater flexural strength than their granite counterparts, quartz worktops are impact-resistant and unlikely to chip or crack. The extremely durable surface also good resistance to scratching, ideal for high traffic areas like busy family kitchens and commercial settings. As a result, with proper care, your work surface may well last a lifetime.

Huge range of colours and patterns

Whether you prefer natural stone, metal or concrete effects, there’s a quartz countertop for every taste. We can even supply authentic marble designs with more uniform swirl patterns for a seamless finish across multiple slabs. We also offer solid colour finishes for a simpler and more contemporary look, plus light-reflecting styles with sparkle or metallic pigments.

Hygienic and stain repellent

Given their non-porous properties, quartz kitchen worktops are resistant to staining liquids and are also more hygienic than wood or other porous materials. They don’t require sealing either and need minimal maintenance, making them easy to clean with a simple mixture of warm soapy water. For this reason, quartz stone is ideal for use in homes with children or pets. And not only in kitchens – the moisture-resistant surface is also a good choice for bathroom vanity tops too.

Heat resistant

Though not quite as heat resistant as granite or porcelain worktops, quartz can withstand moderate heat for short periods. With that in mind, if you need to put a hot tray down suddenly, you won’t have to worry about damage. However, you should still use a trivet or protective mat wherever possible to protect your surface.

Available in virtually any size

Unlike quarried natural stone, quartz kitchen countertops can be engineered in practicality any size and shape to suit your space. This has the added benefit of reducing wastage during manufacturing to ensure the process is as environmentally friendly as possible. We can also create precision cutouts and holes within your worktop to accommodate pre-existing fixtures such as taps and sinks, including adding drainage groves.
