MORE ABOUT OUR STONE OUTDOOR WORKTOPS

What are the best types of stone for outdoor worktops?

At LBS Stone, we recommend that exterior countertops are best made from granite, porcelain or ceramic stone materials. We DO NOT recommend Quartz. The reason for this is that your worktops and all coordinating surface finishes will have to withstand exposure to the elements. As such, they should be UV stable so that they don’t fade or yellow in direct sunlight – for this reason, engineered quartz surfaces are not suitable for use outdoors.

Similarly, they’ll need to be robust enough to endure rain, frost and general wear and tear. Hardwearing granite that has been treated with a professional sealant is a great option thanks to its natural strength. Additionally, granite is generally highly heat resistant, so you won’t accidentally scorch it with a hot pan or barbecue tool. Not to mention a timeless choice in terms of aesthetics, available in numerous shades with natural and beautifully speckled patterning.

The same goes for outdoor countertops made from non-porous, thermally stable and scratch-resistant porcelain. These innovative work surfaces are incredibly dense and very difficult to damage, making them ideal for outdoor use all year-round. They also won’t absorb rainfall or spills, so repel stains with ease.

Meanwhile, more delicate marble, wood and laminate worktops should not be used outside, as they are prone to weathering and stains. Wooden surfaces are also flammable, so must never be positioned close to naked flames.

Whichever material you choose for your exterior countertops, each one is low maintenance and easy to keep clean. Porcelain and ceramic surfaces are non-porous by design and do not require sealing. This also means they are highly resistant to spills and stains, including acidic substances that can stain certain natural stones. As such, you can just wipe them clean with a damp cloth and some mild soap as needed.

Granite is cleaned in much the same way. The only difference is that harsh chemicals may cause damage to the surface. We recommend mild soap or pH-neutral cleaners specifically designed for granite surfaces. You’ll also need to re-seal your granite outdoor worktop annually to maintain its stain resistance and prevent a build-up of bacteria.

Detailed information about cleaning and caring for natural stone, quartz, ceramic and porcelain surfaces can be found in our handy stone care guide.

Yes, we provide a full laser templating service to capture accurate measurements of your space. These dimensions are then fed directly into our computerised cutting machinery to ensure a perfect fit and speed up fabrication time. And as all of our outdoor worktops are manufactured to order, we can accommodate virtually any shape and size you’d like!

Once complete, our experienced installers will carefully transport and fit your new outdoor worktops, cladding and splashbacks using professional grade adhesives. They’ll also seal any joints between your outdoor kitchen worktops and splashbacks for a neat and practical finish.

For daily cleaning, we recommend wiping your marble countertop down with a soft damp cloth and ensure spills are wiped up quickly. You can use mild washing up liquid diluted in warm water or a pH-neutral stone cleaner to clean marble, but do not use harsh chemicals or cleaning pads. Rinse away soap residue with a soft damp cloth when you’re done and don’t forget to dry the surface with a soft clean towel. If left to air dry, the marble may appear dull later.

The key is to avoid harsh cleaning products like vinegar or ammonia that could damage the finish. Just mop up spills as quickly as you can, then try one of the above methods. Likewise, avoid abrasive scourers as these may leave scratches or even strip some of the sealant.

Although marble offers a good degree on heat resistance, it is susceptible to cracking through thermal shock. For this reason, it is recommended that hot pans and countertop cooking appliances such as slow cookers and air fryers should be sat on insulated surface protectors or raised trivets.
