MORE ABOUT OUR GRANITE WORKTOPS & SPLASHBACKS

What is granite?

Granite forms when magma (liquid rock) from deep within the Earth’s crust rises to the surface and crystallises. This process occurs over millions of years, bonding minerals together and cooling slowly to create a robust igneous rock known as granite. Often found in mountainous areas, granite is then quarried out in slabs before being cut to size for different applications.

As well as being highly durable, granite is a naturally attractive stone. In fact, its multi-tonal colour variations and trademark speckled patterning run throughout its layers. As such, granite needs very little processing, other than sealing to protect the porous surface from liquid spills.

We can bespoke granite surfaces for many uses, but here are some popular applications

  • Bespoke kitchen countertops
  • Worktops for breakfast bars and islands
  • Counters for bathroom vanity units
  • Wall cladding (and shower wall cladding)
  • Windowsills
  • Splashbacks
  • Outdoor kitchens/ bars
  • Fireplace hearths

High-strength material

Rated 6-7 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, granite is one of the strongest natural stones. This makes it around twice as hard as marble, with quartz making up a large part of its composition. Due to this, granite worktops are scratch resistant and unlikely to chip or crack. They also stand up well in high traffic areas like family kitchens and can last for decades.

100% natural stone

Except for the sealant applied post-fabrication, granite countertops are completely natural. No chemicals, additives or polymers are used during manufacturing, and only minimal processing is required to finish the surface. As such, granite stone is a more eco-friendly option than composite alternatives. Plus, each slab is entirely unique, with its own individual patterning.

Numerous colours and finishes

At LBS Stone, our varied range features chic black granite worktops, including the best-selling shade Absolute Black. Alongside neutral browns, golds and greys, bold red and blue shades, and lighter white granite worktops like the popular Ivory Fantasy. Each features distinctive freckling and veining as a result of the unique mineral blend that makes up each stone slab. You’ll also have a choice of polished, honed (matte) or leathered finishes as preferred.

Heat and stain-resistant

Unlike engineered quartz counters which contain polymers that can be affected by thermal shock, granite worktops are naturally heat resistant. This makes it perfect for kitchens and fireplace hearths. Of course, we wouldn’t recommend placing hot items directly on the surface for long periods as it can weaken the protective sealant. But if you need to for a moment, you won’t have to worry about scorching. Plus, due to the DrySeal coating we apply to our granite worktops, they are also resistant to spills and stains. Learn more in the Care section below.

Suitable for outdoor use

Furthermore, granite can be used for exterior applications such as patio kitchen worktops. The reason for this is that it is UV resistant, so rich colours won’t fade and white hues won’t yellow. Similarly, granite surfaces are frost-resistant so won’t crack or split in freezing temperatures.

As mentioned, our granite kitchen countertops are highly durable, but they do require a little care to maintain their appearance. With that in mind, we treat all natural stone products with a high-quality sealant designed to repel liquids*. This provides time to clean up spillages and reduces the risk of staining, especially when it comes to acidic or strongly coloured substances. Both of which should be mopped up right away to prevent stains.

The best way to clean granite worktops is with a mild, pH neutral cleaner. Diluted washing up liquid is the simplest option, otherwise you can find specialist marble and granite cleaners by brands such as Method. Just be sure to avoid potent products like vinegar and bleach, as well as harsh scourers. The reason being that they can dull the surface and strip the protective coating. Instead, opt for a soft cloth when wiping the surface clean, then buff it dry.

And remember, whilst granite is more heat resistant than other surfaces, we recommend using a trivet or surface protector wherever possible.

*We use a commercial grade sealant which is guaranteed by the manufacturer for up to 15 years provided it is properly maintained, see manufacturers care guidance here. We reserve the right to change the granite sealant we use.
